BELIEFS
At SOIS, we believe that a strong extracurricular activities program is integral to the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of our students. Therefore, we believe that the Sabers activities program must strive to:
PHILOSOPHY
The overall goal of the Sabers activities program is to enhance the welfare of the student body and the school community. Our aim is to create an atmosphere in which participation is inclusive, physically demanding, mentally challenging, and personally rewarding – part of our two schools’ efforts to produce “informed, caring, creative individuals contributing to a global community.”
As Sabers students and staff, we are all committed to enhancing our tradition of fair play and success. We understand and affirm:
Winning isn't everything. Our philosophy on competition can be summed up as: "While the desire to win must not be stifled, the quest to win must be honorable.” Winning cannot be the only goal. With this in mind, Sabers student-athletes must display the following attitudes:
Values and benefits from athletics do not come automatically from simply participating; they develop under the leadership, knowledge, dedication, and guidance of coaches and captains. At SOIS, competition is properly organized and controlled to make a valuable contribution to the aims of education.
BELIEFS
At SOIS, we believe that a strong extracurricular activities program is integral to the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of our students. Therefore, we believe that the Sabers activities program must strive to:
- be consistent with our two schools’ mission and “two schools together” beliefs;
- provide a range of extracurricular athletic, music, academic and leadership activities;
- maintain reasonable participant fees, travel costs, and time commitments;
- promote productive leadership and meaningful intercultural interaction;
- promote healthy and balanced citizenship;
- provide genuine opportunities for students to develop advanced athletic, academic, music, and leadership skills;
- provide participation opportunities for all students, regardless of skill and experience;
- foster a desire in our students to learn about and learn from athletics and activities;
- field teams that are ethical, skilled, disciplined, dedicated, and motivated;
- field highly competitive teams that understand that “winning isn't everything”;
- provide competent, capable, and caring coaches and chaperones to enhance interpersonal relationships in the school;
- provide safe, quality facilities and equipment;
- maintain our associations with other schools via the Western Japan Activities Association (WJAA) and the Association of International Schools in Asia (AISA).

- that our decisions and actions must be guided by integrity and respect at all times;
- the importance of modeling positive values and exemplary behavior; and
- our responsibility to represent ourselves, our families, and SOIS with honor and dignity.

- cooperative respect towards teammates, opponents, coaches, officials, fans;
- a healthy balance among activities, academics, and social and family life.
