The Sabers high school boys junior varsity basketball team finished in 3rd place at the annual WJAA JV tournament in Yokohama, January 15-16, 2016. The Sabers played 4 games over 2 days, winning their first game handily over co-host YIS and their final game narrowly over co-host St. Maur, earning a well-deserved third place trophy. Captain Luca Ikesu-Ling was a key player for the Sabers in all games. Tye Gazzard was high scorer in the final game. Newcomer Evan Tsubaki improved |
steadily over the season and contributed key baskets throughout the tournament. The Sabers struggled in the final 3 games without star power forward Sean Matsuura, who injured his hand in the opening game victory.
Other members of the team were Sosuke Egami, Daisuke Oto, Ken Taniuchi, Yugo Mima, Kotaro Minamiguchi, Teru Hasegawa, Keito Morimoto, and EJ Shina. Coaches were Peter Heimer and Michael Routh.
The JV season is now over. The Sabers JV players now look forward to next year with aspirations of making the varsity squad.
