An updated format to the annual Sabers athletics awards celebration added a bit of new energy to the event. The celebration, held Friday, June 5, 2015, in the SOIS theater and cafeteria, was set up and run almost entirely by students. (Please visit the “Awards” section of the Sabers athletics website for photos and more details.) |
- Set up: The Sabers Sports Council (SSC) once again was superb in their preparation for the event.
- Masters of ceremony: Sabers TV anchors Ai Kano and Sakiko Otsuki were prepared, poised and profession in their handling of the proceedings.
- Team presentations: In the theater, after a slideshow of Sabers highlight photos, players for 19 boys and girls teams made presentations in which they described highlights of the season.
- Team awards: In addition to the usual Most Improved Player (MIP) and Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards for each team, presentations of a new Sabers Spirit Award (SSA) were made.
- Coaches awards: We bid farewell to departing coaches Mr. Driver (boys soccer) and Mr. Fitzpatrick (girls soccer), and we presented the Sabers Coach of the Year award to Mr. Bertman, middle school and high school swim coach and AISA math mania supervisor.
- Banquet: In the cafeteria, Sabers student-athletes and coaches enjoyed a wonderful meal prepared and served by the SIS PA and SSC.
- School awards: The culminating event of the evening was the presentation of 2 major two-school athletic awards, the Dr. Fukuda Scholar-Athlete Award and the Sabers Outstanding Athlete of the Year Award. (You can read descriptions of these awards and see photos of past award winners in the “Awards” section of the Sabers athletics website at http://sabers.senri.ed.jp/awards.html.)
