MS swimmers compete in Tokyo

12/30/2015

Picture
Twelve SOIS Sabers middle school swimmers traveled to the American School in Japan (ASIJ) in Tokyo to compete in a swim meet on December 11, 2015. The Sabers team finished in a very strong 3rd place out of 9 teams, with the girls finishing 3rd and the boys finishing 4th. Team scores can be seen here. Photos below.

Two of the opposing teams were high school teams, and the other teams come from schools with year-round competitive swim programs. "Considering that we have only a 6-week MS swim season, this is an impressive result for the young Sabers swimmers," commented head coach Mr. Kevin Bertman. "I couldn't be prouder of our swimmers," added assistant coach Ms. Marcella Cooper.
The Sabers team traveled to Tokyo on December 10 and practiced with the ASIJ team before spending the night near the school and competing the next day. After the meet, some time was spent sightseeing near Tokyo Station.

Congratulations to Coach Bertman and Coach Cooper and the 12 SOIS swimmers: Tadayoshi Kamegai, Marina Ninomiya, Shinki Maeda, Hinako Kudo, Sophia Smith, Karin Tomiyama, Kazuma Watanabe, Tomoki Kawabata, Akihiro Takebe, Julia Torieda, Koki Takine, Hanako Uchida.

セイバーズ・スコアボード募金  Sabers scoreboard fundraising campaign 2015-16

NEW!
Donate to the Sabers scoreboard fundraising campaign and receive a limited-edition Sabers jacket with "OB" ("old boy" = graduate) or "PARENT" on the sleeve. Sleek and stylish, these comfy jackets make great gifts and are a super way to show your support for the Sabers.

Sabers basketball, volleyball, and baseball hall-of-famer Makoto Honda, 1998 graduate, sports his new Sabers jacket - the very first official OB jacket. Makoto still plays basketball weekly on the Sabers court, Wednesday nights with teachers, parents, and other OBs - an original Sabers legend, one deserving of an original OB jacket.

Make a contribution of 10,000 yen or more to receive a jacket; just choose a size (SS, S, M, L, O, XO) and sleeve lettering: OB or PARENT. Contact Coach Heimer, Sabers AD, for details: pheimer@senri.ed.jp.

MS Sabers end winter 1 season with strong WJAA performances

12/6/2015

Congratulations to the Sabers MS girls soccer team and boys basketball team on their successful 2015 seasons.

The boys basketball team lost only 2 games during the season with 1 loss, unfortunately, coming in the semifinals of the WJAA tournament, December 4-5, 2015, held at Marist Brothers International School in Kobe, ending the team's chances at a WJAA championship. The Sabers went on to win the 3rd place game, ending the season on a high not. OIS 7th grader Ren Heimer was named to the all-tournament team. Congratulations and thank you, Coach Ray and Coach Kralovec.
The girls soccer team capped a perfect season - no losses, no ties, all wins - by defeating the host Falcons 3-0 in the WJAA championship match held at Canadian Academy in Kobe, December 4-5, 2015. The B team placed 2nd in the B division and the C team placed 1st in the C division. The Sabers WJAA title follows up the team’s Sabers Invitational championship in November. Fantastic season, Coach Frater and Coach Yamashiro. More MS girls soccer info and photos here.
