This past Saturday, October 21, 2017, marked the end of the 2017 fall season for the high school sports of cross country, girls volleyball, and boys volleyball, as all 3 teams competed in Association of International Schools in Asia (AISA) championship tournaments. The Sabers cross country team, coached by Mr. Hisashi Munemasa and Ms. Tara Cheney (and chaperoned on the trip by Mr. Ryuhei Okamoto), traveled to Korea International School in Seoul to compete in the inaugural AISA cross country meet. The Sabers placed 4th as a team, boys and girls combined, out of 6 teams, a respectable showing considering the other schools have long-established running programs and this was the first high school cross country event for the Sabers runners. OIS senior Leola Hara and OIS sophomore Tyus Sheriff were the top finishers for the Sabers. Photos can be found here. |
SOIS hosted the AISA boys volleyball tournament here in the Sabers gym as the Sabers and Coach Toshifumi Mitsuhashi and Coach Keiji Majima powered their way to a second consecutive AISA championship (its 5th in the
past 6 years). A thrilling 5-set victory on Saturday over a very strong Seoul International School Tigers team set up a rematch in the finals against the Korea International School Phoenix, who had soundly defeated the Sabers in pool play the day before. The Sabers, led by some powerful spikes by Tai Gazzard and Teru Hasegawa, rolled to a clear
3-1 victory, cementing the SOIS dynasty in AISA boys volleyball. SIS junior Neo Yokoyama and SIS seniors Hiroya Kobayashi and Tommy Ban were named to the all-tournament team. Check out the tournament webpage for photos and results.
