After opening the 2016-17 season with wins over the Marist Brothers International School Bulldogs (42-27), the Nagoya International School Dolphins (73-40), and the Kyoto International University Academy Flames (55-28), the Sabers high school boys basketball team faced its stiffest challenge of the year from Canadian Academy, November 5, 2016. After leading by 19 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, the Sabers held on for a comfortable 41-33 win to remain undefeated on the season. After the game, assistant coach Michael Routh commented, "It's great to be undefeated so far, but we have much work to do as we prepare for the WJAA and AISA tournaments. But so far the boys have done everything we've asked of them. Very proud and pleased with the effort and attitude, especially from our senior captains Leo Roberts and Aki Shigeyama, and our leading scorer, senior Taizo Heimer."
