The SOIS tennis season is in full swing as the Sabers compete in the domestic WJAA and international AISA tournaments this month, October 2014. Lots of work on the court - and some important work off the court, too.
Congratulations and thank you to sixth grader Minami Matsushima and eleventh grader Risa Asaki on their design submissions for the 2014 AISA tennis tournament t-shirt. Check out the logos below - Minami's striking design on the front and Risa's standout logo on the back. Minami iplays on the Sabers middle school volleyball A team and Risa is a key member of the Sabers AISA tennis team - both girls displaying both artistic and athletic skill. Lots of Sabers action going on this Friday and Saturday, October 3-4, 2014, across Kansai and stretching to Kanto.
Good luck to all players and coaches. Remember to live up to the ideals of Sabers Sportsmanship.
Special thanks to Coach Bill Kralovec (new OIS head of school) for coaching the Sabers MS baseball B team on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at Canadian Academy in Kobe - and for submitting the following report about the Sabers "Killer Bs". The MS boys B team traveled to Rokko Island on a perfect, late summer morning to take on the Falcons of the Canadian Academy. The Falcons jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, before the Sabers battled back to lead 12-5 going into the last inning. The Falcons came back, scoring 7 runs to tie the game, which ended 12-12. The Sabers were led by the bats of Masashi Miyawaki who homered and Myoung Jun Kim who tripled. The Sabers B team continues to work on consistent accurate pitching. Shortstop Leon scored three times in the game. The team demonstrated good sportsmanship and they look forward to this coming Saturday's games on the new field at Marist Brothers International School in Suma, Kobe. The Sabers host the 2014 AISA tennis tournament October 16-19. This is a great opportunity for all Sabers fans and tennis fans - and Sabers tennis fans - to watch the SOIS netters in action. In particular, Sabers senior Kana Yokoyama will be going for an unprecedented 4th girls singles title in a row.
Some tournament information can be found here with updates to come. The AD office is in need of two things:
Special thanks to Mr. Bill Kralovec and Mr. John Van Plantinga as they embarked on their new Sabers careers on Saturday, August 30, 2014. Mr. Van Plantinga takes over as new high school boys volleyball assistant coach. Mr. Kralovec wore three hats on Saturday: head of OIS, father of a Sabers winning pitcher, and home plate umpire. ![]() All Sabers and Sabers fans know about WJAA (Western Japan Activities Association) and AISA (Association of International Schools in Asia). But not so many people know about the WNL - Wednesday Night League. The WNL is a semi-pro basketball league featuring fast-paced full-court games every Wednesday evening in the Sabers gym. Games are played to 11 by ones, gotta win by 2. No zone defenses. No referees: If fouled, call it, if you don't mind being teased for sissiness. Teams are made up of teachers, staff members, parents, graduates, and other members of the extended Sabers community. Players come from all over the world. A recent evening brought out 20 players from 8 different countries: Japan, Korea, China, Australia, England, Czech Republic, Canada, and the US. To schedule a tryout to play in the WNL, please contact the WNL commissioner at [email protected]. ![]() The Sabers TV 2013-14 season came to a close with a great final show on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. Guests were Coach Hirai, who was presented with the 2014 Sabers Coach of the Year Award, and Coach Searle, who - as one of his final official acts as OIS head of school before moving to Italy - presented the season's final Sabers SportyQuote: "Once a Saber, always a Saber." Coach Hirai and Coach Searle certainly epitomize what it means to be a Saber. Congratulations, Coach Hirai, and best wishes, Coach Searle. Sabers TV will start up again in September. Stay tuned. Until then, please check out photos and video at the Sabers TV webpage. ![]() The annual Sabers athletics awards celebration was held Friday, June 6, 2014, in the SOIS theater and cafeteria. In the theater, after a cheerleader performance and a slideshow of Sabers highlight photos, coaches for 19 boys and girls teams made presentations in which they described highlights of the season, thanked managers for their efforts, and awarded Most Improved Player (MIP) and Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards. Then, in the cafeteria, Sabers student-athletes and coaches enjoyed a wonderful meal prepared and served by the SIS PA and OIS PTA. The culminating event of the evening was the presentation of 2 major two-school athletic awards, the Dr. Fukuda Scholar-Athlete Award and the Sabers Outstanding Athlete of the Year Award. (You can read descriptions of these awards and see photos of past award winners in the “Awards” section of the Sabers athletics website at http://sabers.senri.ed.jp/awards.html.) 2014 photos 2014 SABERS ATHLETICS AWARD WINNERS: a superb collection of athletic, studious, high character Sabers student athletes – congratulations to them all on their well-deserved awards. おめでとうございます。
